Fieldwork is an integral part of the earth, life, and social sciences, but has unique logistical constraints, opportunities, and impacts. These considerations affect who becomes a part of field-based science. There are growing efforts to make scientific fieldwork more inclusive, but these are often siloed or institution-specific, limiting their potential to solve problems that cross-cut disciplines.
Caribbean Expression at Yale is an event that takes place during Caribbean American Heritage Month; June. The goal of this event is to provide a space for Caribbean art and culture to shine, as well as give people of Caribbean heritage a space for their voice to be heard and their work to be seen. We intend to host exhibitions, a weekly speaker series, performances and workshops that focuses on specific areas like art, theater, dance and music.

Curator AJ Laird ’24 will provide a tour of this exciting exhibition and will be available for questions and conversation over light refreshments afterwards. No registration is necessary.
For nearly two centuries, the ports of New England were home to the “Yankee” whaling industry. The industry operated from ports such as Nantucket, New Bedford, Mystic, and New Haven. The exhibit centers on the Sterling Library’s Manuscripts and Archives Whaling Logs Collection. Logbooks were essential navigational tools, allowing the captain to consistently track the ship’s position in terms of latitude of longitude. These logbooks also contain extensive documentation of whaling voyages and reveal the complex world of the industry.
This talk will examine the Middle East as simultaneously a foreign policy and domestic concern for diaspora communities. Frequently, a site of ambiguity and contention within domestic law and international institutions, the census rollout of the category demands careful attention to historical nuances, long-standing community activism, and the pitfalls of any kind of institutionalization that excludes.
