Event description:

Featuring works by Ash Arder, Torkwase Dyson, Lungiswa Gqunta, Oluseye. Curated by NXTHVN 2023-2024 Curatorial Fellows, Marquita Flowers and Clare Patrick.

To Echo a Shadow is an offering; a space to investigate, consider, and listen.
Through on-site installations by Ash Arder and Lungiswa Gqunta, as well as select artworks by Torkwase Dyson and Oluseye, this exhibition engages with each artist’s practice through themes of migration, trade, and memory. Often understood through socio-political and economic analysis, these themes are currently presented through ephemeral materials of sound, soil, dirt, light, and inherited knowledge. The selected artists have journeyed through respective family routes such as from rural to urban centers of South Africa; Southern USA to Detroit and Chicago; and the UK to West Africa, as well as Central and South America. Each artist is heavily influenced by their present geographic locations, ancestral roots, generational and current ties to these sites.
